Start at Denver’s Union Station
It takes about 5.5-6 hours to travel from Denver’s Union Station to the city of Glenwood Springs on the Amtrak train. In comparison, drive time is about 2.5-3.5 hours. Depending on the time of season. Amtrak is a great option for travelers who are not comfortable driving on mountain highways or those who want to avoid the unpredictable traffic and potential road closures on Interstate-70.
Purchasing Tickets
To begin your adventure, you'll need to purchase tickets. This can easily be done via Amtrak's website, their mobile app, or by calling their customer service. You have the option to choose from various classes of service, ranging from coach seats to the more luxurious sleeper accommodations, which offer private rooms and meals included in the fare.
Coach seats start at $58 for a one-way trip
Private rooms start at $549 for a one-way trip.
Depending on your type of ticket, you will have a choice between the upper and lower level of the train. The upper level is recommended for better views and less noise from the tracks. However, note there can be more sway from the upper-level so those with motion-sickness may want to choose a lower-level option.
To see the fall foliage, we recommend planning your trip between late September and early October. However, don’t underestimate the beauty of the Rocky Mountains in the winter and seeing the frozen river and snow-capped canyons.
